Introduction

Indoor soccer (also known as indoor football or arena soccer) is an adaptation of association football that initially started in the US and Canada as a means to play soccer in winter when the snow is too deep to play traditional outdoor soccer. The related game futsal is another type of indoor soccer. Futsal is almost exclusively played o
n hard surfaces like ceramic, while indoor soccer may be Soccer ball in snowplayed on AstroTurf or on a hard surface similar to futsal. Regardless of whether you play indoor soccer or futsal, the best indoor soccer shoes are going to be quite different from their outdoor counterparts. Obviously, indoor soccer shoes aren’t cleats, but a lack of cleats isn’t the only feature that optimizes shoes for indoor soccer play, which is why specialized indoor soccer shoes are always the better choice over standard athletic sneakers. It’s also important to recognise the difference between indoor soccer shoes and futsal shoes. That is why I have given my recommendation on futsal shoes to buy also.

When I started writing this guide I checked the out the Nike Mercurial Vapor, Nike Tiempo, Nike Magista and other Nike soccer shoes. However, Nike soccer shoes didn’t make the cut for me in my review of the best indoor soccer shoes and best futsal shoes. The brands that really did stand out for me though, that I have reviewed here, are Addidas (mainly the Samba range) and Puma (with Puma’s Invicto shoes coming out in at number 1 for cheap indoor soccer shoes.)

What to look for when buying indoor soccer shoes

As with all sports, it’s important to choose shoes specifically designed for the sport you’re going to be playing. It may surprise people to learn that indoor soccer is popular enough to have its own category of footwear, but it’s actually a sport that continues to grow in its already pretty impressive popularity. Because of this, indoor soccer shoes are already specialized, and as demand increases, this specialization will only continue. If you’re familiar with basketball shoes, for instance, you know how fine-tuned each detail is. The best indoor futsal and soccer shoes also have genuine thought put into their design to not only achieve better performance on the pitch but also to protect players against specific injuries and strains that are common with indoor football.

GripPivotFlexibilitySpeed
Good grip is one of the essential aspects of a good indoor soccer shoe. A grip is vital for playing on indoor surfaces, which are naturally slicker than the grass and dirt of a traditional soccer field.

For indoor soccer, there’s an indoor solution: a rubber outsole. It gives you the traction you need to be sure-footed, especially if you’re playing an indoor soccer variation that involves a smaller ball, which requires more precise maneuvering that can only be achieved when you have full control of your movements on the indoor pitch.

On the topic of maneuverability, a pivot is important for playing a good game of indoor soccer.

In that way, it is, once again, comparable to basketball. The game may be different, but the complicated foot action involved in each game requires the ability to pivot on a hard surface, which is why pivot-promoting components make for a great soccer shoe.

Flexibility is, of course, important for movement as well.

This is why futsal and indoor soccer shoes feature a low shaft; the ankle has to be able to flex to properly maneuver the ball and this aspect is one of the features that really sets it apart from other indoor athletic shoes, many of which have a high shaft, which would be completely ill-suited to the game of soccer in general.

Speed is very important in indoor soccer. Because the ball is moving across a hard surface, there’s less friction, which means a ball of the same mass will always travel faster on a hard, indoor court than in an outdoor field. Since the ball moves faster, you have to move faster, too. Running has always been crucial with soccer, but running across a hard surface is obviously going to be different than running across a grassy field.

Once again, grip comes into play. But so do other more nuanced features, like flexibility and floor feel. Because of the latter, it would be unwise to substitute running shoes for indoor soccer shoes. The reason being that running shoes are designed to absorb a lot of constant shocks, and are highly cushioned to prevent repetitive motions injuring your joints.

With indoor soccer, you have to be able to have a good sense of the floor not only for stability but because of the quick, foot-based maneuvering that is inherent with the game. This is why indoor soccer shoes are typically designed with a thinner sole. It’s just one of those essential touches that make them optimized specifically for indoor soccer.

That’s not to say that indoor soccer shoes can’t be comfortable. The best indoor soccer shoe brands tend to work around the thinner sole issue by accommodating for it with comfort-promoting features like arch support and more. While it may not seem like much, remember that sport-specific shoes, regardless of the kind, are optimized not only for performance in that sport, but also comfort and safety. When you break down the design details further on each shoe, you start to get a picture of what goes into making a comfortable indoor soccer shoe.

Tips on how to choose the best indoor soccer shoes for your needs

There are a few things to keep in mind when searching for the best indoor soccer shoes for your needs. Consider the following:

  • Always opt for specifically-designed indoor soccer shoes over other athletic shoe types; not only does this optimize performance, but it provides comfort and protects against indoor soccer and futsal-related injuries.
  • Grip and traction are crucial for safety and performance when playing indoor soccer. Consider the sole, what it is made from, and any additional features like tread that may be beneficial.
  • Floor feel is a big aspect of what separates outdoor soccer from indoor soccer. For indoor soccer, you have a very low-resistance terrain to work with, so you need to be able to instinctually feel what your feet and the ball are doing when in play. This means a thinner sole, typically. Avoid thick soles, as they can make play not only more difficult but more dangerous as well.
  • Maneuverability in general is important in all soccer types, but it’s a little different in indoor soccer. In indoor soccer, some of the movements are more basketball-like, such as pivoting; look for a shoe that supports enhanced maneuverability.
  • Quick moves are important in indoor soccer because the ball travels much faster. Opt for a shoe that is optimized for speed.

Add-ons that you may want to consider

Protective Gear Goalkeeper Gloves Indoor Soccer Ball Shoe Care Shoe Bag
Storelli Sports are one of the leading brands when it comes to protective gear. Keep your hands protected with a good pair of gloves. Indoor soccer balls are heavier than regular outdoor soccer balls. They have less bounce in them making them ideal for playing off the wall or dasher board. If your shoes have any seude on them you should consider purchasing a shoe protector. Keep your shoes in tip top condition with an inexpensive shoe bag

The main add-on you’re going to need to consider for indoor soccer is protective gear. The ball goes much faster, surfaces are a lot harder, so there is a lot more potential for injury in indoor soccer and futsal than there is in outdoor play. You may even want to consider protective headgear as concussions are obviously far more likely to happen on a hard surface.

Believe it or not, indoor courts—even hard courts—are rougher on goalkeeper gloves than an outdoor pitch. Indoor goalkeeper gloves are going to be made out of tough materials like latex to withstand the more demanding playstyle.

If you’re in a league, balls and other major equipment will be provided generally. But if you’re starting up casual play, one of the key add-ons you should consider is an indoor soccer ball. Indoor soccer balls are purpose-designed for supporting the fast play that goes along with futsal and other indoor soccer variants.

Finally, as far as your indoor soccer shoes go, you might want to consider an equipment bag or some kind of carrying or storage case for when they’re not in use. While many prefer to wear them as street shoes (and they are pretty cool-looking), for many, these are an investment that should be treated with care. Most find that their indoor soccer shoes hold up for years with aggressive play, but if you find the perfect indoor soccer shoe, you’re going to want it to last a decade or more, which is why protective coverings are key. For extra security, if there are any suede components, consider seasoning your indoor soccer shoes (suede parts only) with Scotch Guard or a similar product to prevent any stains or marks from messing up their appearance and integrity.

Adidas Performance Men’s Samba Classic Indoor Soccer Shoe – Best Indoor Soccer Shoes for 2017

Features

Soft leather uppersGum rubber outsole Die-cut EVA insole Pivot point Tread
The full-grain leather uppers of the Men’s Samba Classic Indoor Soccer shoe mean that the leather has never been buffed or sanded; because of this, the leather is stronger and more durable. It’s also extremely soft and flexible, allowing you the agility it takes to play an epic game of indoor soccer.
The gum rubber outsole prevents the shoes from marking up indoor surfaces. More importantly, the rubber sole provides the grip you need to be stable and make controlled, precise movements during gameplay. The real rubber also allows better floor sensitivity, so your game is more intuitive and natural, like the traditional outdoor play on grass.
EVA stands for ethylene vinyl acetate. It’s a polymer used to create a dense, cushy foam that’s common in athletic footwear, because of its ability to act as a shock absorber without compromising the performance of the shoe. The die-cut EVA insole in the Samba Classics means that the EVA insole is cut to precision, allowing for supportive comfort and superior shock absorption.
The outsole features a pivot point at the first metatarsal head. This feature is essential for playing indoor soccer, because of the movements you make when you play on hard flooring are that much different than on grass.
Pivot points are quite common in basketball shoes, and since many indoor soccer arenas are repurposed basketball courts, it makes sense that the shoe style would have some similarities.
A pivot point allows you to make more precise rapid maneuvers, especially turns and, of course, pivots.
The quality and type of tread is often overlooked on athletic shoes in general, but it’s especially important when you’re playing on a hard, indoor surface, like during a futsal match.
The impressive tread on the Men’s Samba Classic is a great example of how tread should be to prevent slippage while playing on hard courts.
The tread around the toe of the shoe surrounding the pivot points is a triangular pattern which provides traction while still allowing the main pivot point to do its job. Meanwhile, the heal-half of the outsole features a tight wavy pattern which allows for speed during sprinting and other fast movements.

Pros

  • One of the most durable indoor soccer shoes on the market, period, thanks to being made of genuine, high-quality materials

  • Optimized for better ball control while playing indoors

  • The gum rubber outsole provides traction without marking up indoor surfaces

  • Die cut EVA insole

  • Full-grain leather uppers for quality and comfort

  • A textile lining provides extra comfort

  • Cushioned foot bed for shock absorption and comfort without sacrificing floor feel

  • The extended tongue makes for better indoor playing

  • The pivot points aid maneuverability

  • The extensive tread is ideal for playing on a hard court

  • Classically retro adidas look is stylish and looks great off-court as well

Cons
Things to consider:

  • Some people aren’t fans of the insole on the Men’s Samba Classic. This is actually due to the arch support under the insole, and not the insole itself, which may be too supportive for those with flatter feet. However, it’s actually really easy to remove the insole, so you can customize it however you like. Most people prefer to take out the arch support under the insole and then put the insole back in, finding that gives them enough support. You could also put in an arch support that better caters to the shape of your foot for additional comfort.

Kelme Star 360 Men’s Michelin Leather Mesh Inset Soccer Shoes – Best Futsal Shoes for 2017

Features

Designed explicitly for futsal Leather and synthetic mesh uppers Michelin rubber sole Low profile sole
Futsal is a specific type of indoor soccer and it’s always played on hard surfaces. These two concepts are directly imbedded in the design of Kelme’s shoe. It’s optimized specifically for futsal. So, whether it’s the hard, slick floors; the face-paced game; the runaway ball or making a great play, these shoes are designed to give you the proper edge you need to play your best futsal game.
The Kelme’s uppers consist of genuine leather that’s been perforated for ventilation; meanwhile, the area around the tongue is made of mesh. The mesh is not only breathable, but it adds the firm yet flexible quality you need in that area to make a good futsal shoe, because it’s necessary for having control over the ball.
Kelme has utilized Michelin’s rubber tire technology to make one of the best futsal shoes on the market today. Michelin tires feature an advanced rubber compound which is incredibly responsive to the car’s steering. That same responsiveness transfers to you and your Kelme Star 360’s on the futsal pitch, by giving you superior control on a hard, unforgiving surface.
Aside of the Michelin rubber technology, the sole has another thing going for it: its low-profile design. A lot of people overlook the importance of a low-profile sole in an indoor soccer shoe, but the benefit cannot be overstated: you need increased floor sensitivity on hard surfaces, which is one of the great benefits of having a thinner sole. And because of the insole and the Michelin rubber on the outsole, you still get great shock absorption for comfort.
Pros

  • Kelme uses Michelin tire technology to enhance their rubber outsoles

  • Rubber outsoles contain alternating star and thatched tread patterns to create excellent traction on the floor

  • The outsoles are non-skid and don’t mark floors

  • The sole is low-profile for better floor feel

  • Genuine leather uppers add class and durability

  • Mesh around the collar and tongue of the shoe creates flexible, supportive strength
Pros
Things to consider:
  • The Kelme Star 360 Men’s Michelin Leather Mesh Inset Soccer Shoes are known to run small; most people find they have to go a half size down. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s always a little annoying when a shoe doesn’t run true to size.

Adidas Performance Men’s Messi 15.3 Indoor Soccer Shoe – Featuring messiTouch X-ray upper

Features

Rubber sole messiTouch X-ray upper Low top shaft Padded tongue and collar Foam insole
The sole is rubber and features an alligator-scale like tread to give you the right amount of traction on hard floors without sacrificing movement ability.
The Performance’s Men’s Messi 15.3 Indoor Soccer Shoe is inspired by Messi himself, and the upper on the Indoor Soccer Shoe is just like the upper on the outdoor soccer boot, and was designed in close consultation with Messi. The result is an upper that is high-performance, but also sleek and stylish. Inside, there is molding in the mid-foot area to provide support and reduce shock.
The Messi 15.3 Indoor Soccer Shoe features a low shaft that’s ideal for promoting the movement and flexibility that is essential to the game of soccer as a whole, but especially important in futsal, when the ball is moving a lot faster and more agility from the player is required.
The tongue and collar are lightly padded. This adds ankle support without compromising flexibility, so you’re still able to get the wide range of motion you need.
The foam insole keeps your feet comfortable and joints safe by absorbing the shock you get from running across a hard floor. A good insole is essential in any indoor football shoe, because you need the thin outsole for floor sensitivity; without a cushioning insole to absorb shock, your joints will eventually start to feel the pain.

  • Real leather uppers

  • Mesh for breathability and movement

  • Foam insole adds support and shock absorption

  • Padded tongue and collar

  • Low tops promote flexibility

  • messiTOUCH X-ray upper looks cool, functions well, and was designed with input from Messi

  • The rubber sole provides traction and prevents marking on the floor
Pros
Things to consider:
  • This shoe runs a half to a whole size small, even if you compare it to the Samba, for instance. This can make sizing tricky; on the other hand, some men get a confidence boost from bigger shoe sizes.
